Deal activity by volume related to ESG increased by 78% year-on-year in 2023 in the retail banking industry

Analysis of the key themes driving deal activity reveals that ESG accounted for 91 retail banking deals between 2019 and 2023, worth a total value of $11,340m, according to GlobalData’s Deals database covering mergers and acquisitions, private equity, venture financing, equity offerings and partnerships.  

The $1bn acquisition of 25% stake by Italian and foreign institutional investors in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena was the largest disclosed deal in 2023, while the $464m acquisition of an additional 15% stake in Rizal Commercial Banking by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking was the largest disclosed deal in 2022.  

In volume terms, ESG related deal activity increased by 78% year-on-year in 2023 and by 100% year-on-year in 2022.

Venture financing accounted for the highest number of deals in the last five years, with 25 deals, followed by Acquisition (22 deals), and Equity offerings (13 deals).
