Hiring activity related to robotics increased by a CAGR of 90% in the oil & gas industry since 2020  

The global oil & gas industry witnessed a 90% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to robotics since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 77% year-on-year in 2021, and by 104% year-on-year in 2022. 

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 20% share of the global oil & gas industry’s robotics-related new job postings since 2020.  

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 20%, emerged as the top robotics-related job roles within the oil & gas industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 61% year-on-year in 2021 and by 100% year-on-year in 2022. 

Architecture and engineering occupations came in second with a share of 19%, with new job postings increasing by 73% year-on-year in 2021 and by 225% year-on-year in 2022.  

The other prominent robotics roles include production occupations (14% share), management occupations (12% share), and office and administrative support occupations (7% share). 

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Sherwin-Williams, BASF, NOV, Corteva, and Oceaneering International. Together they accounted for a combined share of 45% of all robotics-related new jobs in the oil & gas industry. 

Sherwin-Williams posted 533 robotics-related jobs since 2020, followed by BASF with 387 jobs and NOV with 214 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database. 

New job postings by Sherwin-Williams increased by 782% year-on-year in 2021 and by 144% year-on-year in 2022, while those by BASF increased by 17% in 2021 and by 339% in 2022. 

The largest share of robotics-related new job postings in the oil & gas industry since 2020 was in the US with 55%, followed by India (7%) and Canada (4%). The share represented by the US increased by three percentage points from 54% in 2021 to 57% in 2022.
