Patent applications related to robotics decreased by 3% per year on average in the automotive industry since 2020

The global automotive industry experienced a 3% decrease in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of robotics-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of robotics-related grants increased by an AAGR of 24% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.
Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 48,996 since 2020, while 31,330 applications were granted.
The top five companies by filings accounted for 14% of patent applications
Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that Toyota Motor filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry since 2020. The company filed 1,445 robotics-related patents since 2020.
It was followed by LG (1,368 applications), Hyundai Motor (863 applications), Robert Bosch Stiftung (731 applications) and Alphabet (708 applications).
The top five companies by grants accounted for 15% of successful patent grants
Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that Toyota Motor was granted 892 patents related to robotics within the automotive industry since 2020. It was followed by LG (790 grants), Honda Motor (543 grants), SZ DJI Technology (435 grants) and Alphabet (424 grants).
Patent activity was driven by China with a 47% share of total patent publications
The largest share of robotics-related patent publications in the automotive industry since 2020 was held by China with 47%, followed by the US (29%) and Japan (9%).
